  1. a degree in Education with at least Second Class (Honours) from the University of Malta or a degree from another university recognised as equivalent fort the purpose together with a minimum of one year's teaching experience or
  2. any other degree with at least Second Class (Honours) together with a recognised teaching or education qualification and a minimum of one year's teaching experience or
  3. a degree in Education or a Teacher's Certificate together with at least five years' teaching experience and other suitable qualifications obtained following the degree or after the Teacher's Certificate or
  4. any first cycle degree with either a recognised teaching qualification or a Diploma in Education together with five years' experience in an education setting.

Applicants admitted under (c) or (d) shall be required to attend an interview during which they shall be requested to provide evidence of prior experiential learning and to demonstrate that they are capable of completing the Course and may be required to complete a preparatory programme.

The Master of Education (Early Childhood and Primary Education) in Early Childhood Education and Care offers you the opportunity as an educator to advance your values, knowledge, and skills in this area of study through the lens of research. The early years, particularly the first seven years of life, are fundamental for developing brains and the foundations for future learning and success in the lives of citizens in society. It is critical that as an educator and leader in early years education, we invest in furthering your studies to contribute to your professionalisation of the early years' workforce and to the concerted efforts needed for quality provision. The research study at the postgraduate level will involve critically engaging with literature relevant to the chosen area, identifying a research gap, developing a research question, designing appropriate research methodology, collecting data, and obtaining finings to answer the research question.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Education - M.Ed. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Education.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Review and critically engage in literature relevant to the field of early childhood education and care;
  • Develop a focused research question/s and a research methodology to provide a best-fit answer to the set question/s;
  • Engage in academic discussions and the process of feedback throughout the research process;
  • Analyse data collected through the required tools to narrow down to conceptual conclusions;
  • Use the new knowledge to provide implications for future research, policy, and practice in early childhood education and care; and
  • Write and present academic papers for peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.
